No Such Thing As Too Much Wine

The shower seemed like an odd place to store wine, but, more than 20 years later, I can still picture the wooden crates stacked neatly in the disused bathroom at my friend’s house. When we stay with my in-laws, we hang our towels on a wine rack tucked into the corner of their guest bedroom. More bottles are loosely arranged on shelves and in boxes in the room next door. My parent’s collection spans a closet, two coolers, and a fridge. Wine club allocations are often on the floor of their garage waiting to be put away.

Wine Boxes

There are plenty of wine inventory management apps and websites. Nevertheless, many people, if they use any tool, prefer spreadsheets. For years, my parents used a spreadsheet to keep track of their wine. It worked well enough, and the ubiquity of spreadsheets kept it relevant as software moved to the web.

Spreadsheet

Their spreadsheet, however, was often out of date. Notes maintained on paper copies weren’t always transferred to the digital version. Bottles were occasionally put away or moved without updating their list. While it was possible to maintain the spreadsheet on a phone, it certainly wasn’t practical.

I spent some time cataloging their collection and fixing the errors. It was the perfect opportunity to migrate to a new system, but nothing else fit the bill. Other options were in need of modernization, cluttered with unnecessary features, or too complicated for the average collector. So, I decided to make my own.

Wine Racks

CorkDB is a wine inventory management system designed to replace that spreadsheet. It’s built to adapt to any storage solution, from a climate controlled cellar to crates stacked in a shower. I intend to keep it simple, so maintaining a collection doesn’t become a chore.

If you’ve been thinking about retiring your spreadsheet or you’ve put off organizing your wine collection, give CorkDB a try. It’s free to get started.
